Windows 10 is just around the corner
If any of you have been reading the news lately you know Microsoft is
getting ready to release Windows 10. As bait, they are offering it as a
free upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users, which is great news for most of
us. I actually have to give Microsoft kudos for realizing their stumble
with Windows 8 and trying to correct it. However for us cruisers and
world travelers there’s a small caveat that I want to bring to your
attention. The pundits in the high tech world are all saying the same
thing: “Windows 10 home edition will not allow users to disable or defer
updates.” At first glance this seems harmless and it is for you’re a
normal land based first world citizen. For us world travelers whose
internet access is less than reliable it could be a problem, our
use-case doesn’t seem to be something Microsoft has prioritized very
high. This could mean when you finally reach your destination and it has
a less than robust internet connection in terms of either bandwidth or
reliability. It could without regards, consume what precious little
connectivity you have trying to get the new updates, sidelining your
emails, social media access, and other user activities. At this point
all this is speculation on my part and the tech pundits, but I wanted to
share the possibility with everyone so you would be aware and not get
blind sided during the excitement of the Windows 10 release. Be careful
and make an informed decision when you do decide to upgrade.
[Update]
Millions of people have completed the free Windows 10 upgrade and and from most reports it looks like it’s working. However in regards to my original warning, here’s an article from Forbes Magazine that shows exactly the kind of problem I was concerned about, especially the whole idea that upgrades can no longer be disabled or deferred:
