PLASTICS: The ultimate double edge sword.

We need to be careful we don’t cut ourselves.

I will be perfectly honest Plastics are a modern day marvel. They can be molded into almost anything we need, they are light weight, durable, and just damn handy. However as this video attests to, our planet cannot digest plastics, for all intent and purpose it does not degrade. For this reason I think it’s our responsibilities as the creators of this material to properly manage it, before it cuts us. (it may already be cutting us and we just don’t know it yet)

I personally use plastics, I’m not sure if you can live a modern life and not use it. However I do my best to limit my consumption of plastic and recycle. (Down-cycling is a topic for another discussion) I’m not advocating the complete dismissal of plastics, just some prudence on our part in how we consume it and recycle it. There’s little need for one-time plastics.

One-time use plastic is a perfect example of bad plastic management. I try to avoid one-time use plastic items as much as possible. I have a collapsible water bottle and keep bags in my car, just in case. In the grand scheme of things am I going to make a difference? Probably about as much a snow flake in an avalanche, but it has to start somewhere. If ‘think globally, act locally’ ever had a point, I think plastics would be it.

This video on Youtube and it does a great job of explaining the plastic problem that we are facing today.

Can you reduce your plastic usage, say one plastic bottle a week to start?

Cheers,
